PSW – Personal Support Worker

Program Description

ONTARIO GOVERNMENT WILL PAY FOR YOUR PSW PROGRAM! LEARN HOW TO QUALIFY

The Ontario government is providing financial assistance to help train Personal Support Workers. Eligible students in private career colleges can receive up to $13,690 to cover the costs of tuition, books and other mandatory fees, as well as a stipend for a clinical work placement.

This financial support may be available to new students enrolled in a PSW program at one of the participating Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) approved private career colleges.

This program will teach you how to truly care for and assist clients and families in their networks and foundations to live happy lives. As a student in this program, you will develop a broad range of skills that emphasize respect, real response, and consideration for each client’s uniqueness. You’ll also get the opportunity to participate in cross-disciplinary and cross-professional learning opportunities with people in the care and administration field, such as Practical Nurses, Registered Nurses, and Social Service Workers.

Admission Requirements

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent
  • OR Equivalent International Credential are accepted only if assessed by WES/CES/ICAS/IQAS
  • OR Mature students successfully pass the Wonderlic basic skill test (both verbal & quantitative )
  • A passing score on the NACC Technical Literacy Exam
  • Passing an admission interview
  • Signed Vulnerable Sector Disclaimer upon enrollment and Police clearance is required
  • Signed Medical Disclaimer upon enrollment

Courses

Things you’ll learn to do:

  • Assist clients of all ages with daily living activities
  • Provide personal care with dignity and respect
  • Work in long-term care, senior day programs,supportive housing and other settings
  • Engage clients in social activities and alleviate effects of isolation
  • Work safely, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and infection control protocols

Hands-on experience
Your training will include 310 hours in two practicum settings: a long-term care facility and a community setting. Chartwell will arrange your placements for you, and a faculty member will supervise your long-term care placement. Many students receive job offers from their placement employers.

Experienced and passionate professors
All professors teaching in the Personal Support Worker program hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree in nursing. They’re also heavily engaged in the personal care field and bring their experience and passion for personal support work to the classroom. You’ll learn from them in our dedicated and well-equipped lab space at NetPlus College in Scarborough Campus.
